3 Things To Try Before Seeking Divorce
When you first start thinking about divorce, you may wonder if your marriage can be helped. That's why you have to do everything possible to make sure that a divorce is what you really want. Here are three things you can do now to see if your marriage is worth saving.
Take Responsibility
In most marriages, one person is not causing all of the strife in a marriage. Even if it feels like your spouse is the one who is doing everything wrong, try to see things from a different perspective and think about how you may contribute to the problems in your marriage. Do you work too many hours? Are you unable to communicate well? Are you always nagging?
If you really can't think of anything you are doing wrong, wait until there is a peaceful moment between you and your spouse and ask what they think. Their opinion may not be a reflection of the truth, but you can take what they say as a starting place to determine where you could improve.
Write a Journal of Appreciation
A journal can be a big help to a marriage. You may spend so much time looking for what is wrong with your spouse that you don't see what they're doing right. If you make a point to use a journal to write down at least three or four things that they do that you like, you may find that there is more good in your spouse than you thought.
Go on Dates
You may think that the end of your marriage is a strange time to start going on dates with your spouse, but it very well may help. After all, there was a time when you two liked each other very much. It may be that the responsibilities of children, work and family life are interfering with your experiences with the person you truly love.
Make a commitment to each other to go out at least once a week, just the two of you. You may be able to start to reconnect on a level that you haven't for some time. If you can't agree on where to go, let one person choose one week, and another the next.
Give the ideas in this article a chance to work, and you may be able to save your marriage. If you two still feel that you are on the road to separation, talk to a divorce lawyer, such as Albert & Slater PS, to see what the best course of action is.
